The Story of Jonah
Jonah was a prophet in northern Israel from c770 to 760 BC. The key themes in the Book of Jonah are divine patience and mercy through a story of redemption, resurrection, and repentance.1
Jonah is asked by God to go to Nineveh, modern-day Mosul, Iraq, to preach repentance to over 120k gentiles. However, Jonah runs away to Joppa, the modern-day port of Jaffa on the Mediterranean Sea, to catch a ship to Tarshish (modern-day Spain, Sardinia, or Turkey).
Due to a great storm, the crew throws Jonah off the ship and he is swallowed by a fish, whale, or sea monster. After three days in the belly of the sea creature, he is spit out onto dry land to travel to Nineveh to preach where the entire pagan city comes to repentance and is saved.2
